Double Vision

Urgent

Sudden double vision — especially with a drooping eyelid, weakness, difficulty speaking or a severe headache — needs prompt evaluation.

Double vision means seeing two images of a single object. It can be temporary or persistent, and it may affect one eye or both.

What can cause it?

Whether the double vision disappears when you cover one eye is an important clue, and it is one of the first things we check. Causes include:

  • Problems with eye alignment
  • Weak eye muscles
  • Nerve problems
  • Thyroid eye disease
  • Cataract
  • Corneal irregularity
  • Neurological conditions

When should you have it checked?

New or persistent double vision should always be assessed.

Sudden double vision, especially together with a drooping eyelid, weakness, difficulty speaking or a severe headache, needs prompt evaluation rather than a routine appointment.

How we can help

We assess your vision, your eye movements and your eye alignment, and examine the eyes themselves. If a neurological cause is suspected, we advise further assessment and arrange the appropriate referral.
