Red or Painful Eye

Urgent

Significant eye pain, reduced vision, marked light sensitivity, or redness while wearing contact lenses should be assessed promptly.

A red or painful eye can have many different causes. Some are minor, such as dryness or allergy, while others need prompt assessment to prevent complications.

What can cause it?

Redness and pain are the eye's general response to irritation, infection or inflammation, so the list of possible causes is wide:

  • Dry eye disease
  • Blepharitis
  • Allergies and allergic conjunctivitis
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Corneal irritation or infection
  • A foreign body or a scratch on the eye surface
  • Uveitis, or inflammation inside the eye
  • Contact lens–related problems
  • Acute glaucoma

When should you have it checked?

Seek prompt assessment if you have significant eye pain, reduced or blurred vision, marked light sensitivity, redness while wearing contact lenses, or halos around lights.

A red eye that is uncomfortable but painless, with normal vision, is usually less urgent — but it still deserves an examination if it does not settle within a few days.

How we can help

We examine the eye surface, the eyelids, the cornea and the internal structures of the eye to determine the cause, and then advise the care that fits the diagnosis.
