Blurry or Distorted Vision

Blurred or distorted vision can develop gradually or appear suddenly. It may affect one eye or both, and it can have many different causes.

What can cause it?

Blur and distortion are different symptoms. Blur usually means the eye is not focusing light sharply; distortion — straight lines appearing bent or wavy — more often points to the retina. Causes include:

  • A change in your glasses prescription
  • Dry eye
  • Cataract
  • Corneal problems
  • Macular degeneration
  • Diabetic eye disease
  • Other retinal conditions
  • Glaucoma

When should you have it checked?

Gradually changing vision should be assessed once it starts interfering with daily activities such as reading, driving or screen work.

Sudden loss of vision or new distortion — especially alongside flashes or floaters — should be checked promptly rather than monitored at home.

How we can help

We examine your eyes and may perform tests such as refraction, slit-lamp examination, OCT imaging or other diagnostic tests to establish the cause and to separate a simple prescription change from something that needs closer follow-up.
