Sudden Vision Loss

Urgent

Sudden vision loss should be assessed urgently. Please contact us as soon as possible.

A sudden decrease or loss of vision should always be taken seriously and needs prompt medical attention. Whether it affects one eye or both, and whether or not it is painful, the timing matters more than the severity.

What can cause it?

Sudden loss usually involves the structures that carry vision to the brain, or the blood supply that keeps them working:

  • Problems involving the retina
  • Blocked or damaged blood vessels
  • Optic nerve problems
  • Bleeding inside the eye
  • Retinal detachment
  • Acute glaucoma
  • Inflammation inside the eye

When should you seek care?

Sudden vision loss should be assessed urgently — particularly when it comes with any of the following:

  • Flashes of light
  • A shadow or curtain across your vision
  • Eye pain
  • Distorted vision
  • Neurological symptoms such as weakness or difficulty speaking

In several of these causes, the outcome depends heavily on how quickly the eye is examined. Please contact us as soon as possible rather than waiting to see whether it improves.

How we can help

We assess with a detailed eye examination and imaging to identify the cause quickly. If hospital care or surgery is required, we will advise you clearly and coordinate the appropriate care.
