What can cause it?
Peripheral loss points to the parts of the visual system that carry side vision — the outer retina and the optic nerve:
- Glaucoma
- Retinal disease
- Retinal detachment
- Optic nerve disease
- Neurological conditions
When should you have it checked?
Have your eyes assessed if you notice difficulty seeing to the sides, if you find yourself bumping into things, or if your vision feels as though it is narrowing.

We assess the retina and the optic nerve, and may perform visual field testing, OCT imaging or other investigations to map exactly what is affected and to establish whether it is changing over time.
