Sudden loss of vision, whether in one eye or both eyes, should always be treated as urgent. It may be linked to a serious problem affecting the retina, optic nerve, blood flow, or another part of the eye.

Please seek urgent eye care immediately if your vision suddenly becomes blurred, dark, missing, or significantly reduced.

Severe eye pain can be caused by inflammation, infection, injury, high eye pressure, corneal problems, or other serious eye conditions. Pain may feel sharp, aching, throbbing, or like strong pressure inside or around the eye.

If the pain is intense, sudden, worsening, or associated with blurred vision, nausea, headache, redness, or light sensitivity, seek urgent eye care.

Flashes can look like brief sparks, lightning streaks, or flickering lights. Floaters may appear as dots, lines, cobwebs, or shadows moving across your vision. These symptoms can sometimes be linked to changes inside the eye, but they may also be a warning sign of a retinal tear or retinal detachment.

Please arrange an urgent eye assessment if you notice new flashes, a sudden increase in floaters, or floaters and flashes together.

A curtain, shadow, or dark area moving across your vision can be a warning sign of a retinal problem, including retinal detachment. It may feel as though part of your vision is missing or covered.

This symptom needs urgent assessment. Please seek urgent eye care immediately.

An eye injury can happen from a scratch, impact, foreign body, contact lens problem, sharp object, or chemical exposure. Chemical splashes are especially urgent and can damage the surface of the eye very quickly.

If a chemical gets into the eye, rinse the eye immediately with clean running water or sterile saline and seek urgent medical or eye care straight away. For any injury with pain, redness, swelling, bleeding, or blurred vision, seek urgent assessment.

Sudden double vision can be related to eye muscle problems, nerve problems, eye alignment issues, trauma, or general health conditions. It may be present when looking in certain directions or all the time.

Because sudden double vision can sometimes indicate a serious underlying cause, it should be assessed urgently, especially if it is new or associated with headache, weakness, dizziness, or vision changes.

A red eye with pain, sensitivity to light, or reduced vision may be linked to inflammation, infection, corneal problems, high eye pressure, or other conditions that need prompt treatment. This is different from mild redness or irritation.

Please seek urgent eye care if your red eye is painful, affects your sight, causes strong light sensitivity, or is getting worse.

Seeing halos around lights can sometimes happen with cataracts, dry eye, or prescription changes, but halos combined with eye pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, or sudden blurred vision may be a sign of raised eye pressure or another urgent eye condition.

If these symptoms happen together, seek urgent eye care immediately.

Sudden swelling around the eye can be caused by infection, allergy, inflammation, trauma, or other medical conditions. It may affect the eyelid, the area around the eye, or the movement of the eye.

Seek urgent care if the swelling is painful, worsening quickly, affects your vision, comes with fever, or makes it difficult to move the eye.

New pain, redness, blurred vision, floaters, discharge, or worsening vision after eye surgery or an eye injection should be checked urgently. These symptoms may indicate inflammation, infection, pressure changes, or another complication that needs prompt attention.
